At first glance, kumiko seems like a perfect undertaking for someone that loves to work only with hand tools. All you need is a chisel, a saw, and some guide blocks, right? Well, yes. But, truthfully, no. Why? Because you need strips to make the frame and patterns. And you can't walk into a lumberyard and get strips the size you need for kumiko. And to turn rough lumber into kumiko strips you need a jointer, planer, and tablesaw (at least, a bandsaw also is good to have). I've been selling blank strips (no notches cut into them), but only when paired with a guide block. Now you can get bundles of blank strips without buying a guide block. The strips are just over 1/8 in. thick, 3/8 in. wide (or tall), and 15 in. long. They come in bundles of 20 strips. If you would like strips in a length other than 15 in., let me known and I can provide them.
